We got chickens last week. Three families, including ours, have gone in together to buy and look after 10 laying hens. We have borrowed a plot of land from a friend (thnks James Stockan) and expect some fresh eggs in a few weeks.

We got chickens last week. Three families, including ours, have gone in together to buy and look after 10 laying hens. We have borrowed a plot of land from a friend (thnks James Stockan) and expect some fresh eggs in a few weeks.
I have to hide this post from my wife, she has been saying that she wants to get a few chickens for the past year, but we live in a suburban area. If she reads this she will start looking for “a plot of land to borrow.”
The city where I serve is fairly affluent, huge homes and gated communities. In one of those communities one of my parishoners raised chickens to the delight of his daughter and frustration of his neighbors. The truly sticky part was when he killed one of them (chickens not neighbors) and then had to explain its absence to his daughter. The neighbors did not mind one less chicken, they were even more frustrated when he shot a deer and then hung on the basketball standard. True story.
Thank God for chickens.
