Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008)

The world’s most famous Kiwi died and made Number 1 Google News. NZ Herald reports that “New Zealand climber Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb Mount Everest, has died at the age of 88… The cause of Sir Edmund’s death was not announced, but he had been ill for some time and New Zealand media is reporting that he had been suffering pneumonia.”

I was born in New Zealand but left as a teenager. And I never met Sir Edmund. But I did grew up, like other Kiwi kids, with his legendary accomplishment as a motivational force.

Hillary’s famous quotes are worth a read, like the announcement to his companions after he and Tensing reached the top of Everest – “We knocked the bastard off!”

Very sad to hear of this. My husband was a climber in his youth, and our younger daughter is named Hillary after Sir Edmund.
