refresh yourself in good deeds

My word for the day from Tommy Boy.
“. . . it is well for you to apply yourself to humble, outward works and to refresh yourself in good deeds, to await with unshaken confidence My heavenly visitation, patiently to bear your exile and dryness of mind until you are again visited by Me and freed of all anxieties. For I will cause you to forget your labors and to enjoy inward quiet. I will spread before you the open fields of the Scriptures, so that with an open heart you may begin to advance in the way of My commandments.”

This is exactly what we have been struggling with in our group of “emerging adults.” How to teach someone that God loves them, how to teach them the spiritual disciplines in a context of relationship. So often we teach, “do, do, do” in a context void of relationship…but how can we teach or coax someone to have a relationhip other than saying a thousand times, “He loves you,” ” He died for you,” “He wants to be with you.” We want those around us to obtain something higher, but they have to have the love first…and how do we teach love outide of relationship, prayer and genuine concern for one another. So we serve, tell of his love…and when someone asks how, we must say, “If you haven’t seen it, how can I tell you.”
