I just paid for Quick Time Pro . . . again. I hate paying again. But I need the pro features to work with version 7. And I am looking forward to test driving the new H.264 codec. I have been using Quicktime Pro for 5 years. Its amazing what you can do with just QT – perfect for editing those movie trailers.
The biggest challenge i have now is demuxing my video from my small camera footage. I was using bbDEMUX but have had difficulties with it. I just downloaded FFmpegX and will probably use it for demuxing and muxing in the future. Powerful program.

I agree – it stinks to pay twice. When QT 7 first came out, I upgraded from version 6 via Software Update, not realizing that my license for Pro wasn’t valid for 7 (a bit sneaky on Apple’s part, I think). Fortunately I located the instructions for reverting to QT 6 on Apple’s site – and my registration key for Pro was still valid. I’m sticking with 6 for as long as I can.
Dan P:
How is it sneaky? It said in the Read Me file that comes up via Software Update that QuickTime 6 Pro keys would not work in QuickTime 7. It also said the same thing on the outside of the Tiger retail box. I guess you also consider ringing the door bell as someone trying to sneak into your house.
i think its sneaky because if your updater installs in al almost automatically, then you dont read all that stuff and finding Quicktime 6 is not easy
So when the window that pops up with the license agreement, and says “IMPORTANT NOTICE TO QUICKTIME PRO USERS: INSTALLATION OF QUICKTIME 7 WILL DISABLE THE QUICKTIME PRO FUNCTIONALITY IN PRIOR VERSIONS OF QUICKTIME. IF YOU PROCEED WITH THIS INSTALLATION, YOU MUST PURCHASE A NEW QUICKTIME 7 PRO KEY TO REGAIN QUICKTIME PRO FUNCTIONALITY. AFTER INSTALLATION, VISIT http://WWW.APPLE.COM/QUICKTIME TO PURCHASE A QUICKTIME 7 PRO KEY. ” that’s sneaky?
I thought “sneaky” was being polite. A product you have to pay for should not be included in Apple’s automatic updates. Frankly I find it very annoying that Q7 continues to appear in my updater and that I have to pay full cost to update when I had only owned Q6 for 2 months prior to the new version coming out. I have no other pro-audio or video software that expects me to pay full product cost for an update. Most allow a free update or a small fee.
This episode woke me up to the fact that, from a corporate perspective, Apple is a lot more like Microsoft than I had imagined. Apple’s products just look and drive more sexy.
You have no other pro-audo software that has added codecs to the feature set. It isn’t like Apple is ripping you off. If you do not want the update go to the update menu and choose “Ignore update.” Quicktime 6 lasted approximately 2 years. If you cannot afford $29 after two years, ask Blockbuster or Burger King for a raise.
Thanks for the advice, Matt.
Peace bro. Mike.
