and that doesn’t even list the house church networks in China that have close to a million people…

    thanks steve – true
wolfgangs list is local but not national groupings

  • America isn’t the biggest (or the best)

This should demonstrate that America isn’t necessarily to place to look for the biggest and best in the world. These churches are thriving and, as Steve notes, doing so in dangerous areas.

  • Big

I have some serious questions about HOW a church of 253,000 can be considered to be one congregation rather than a denomination!
Are we saying 253,000 people turn up each sunday (or whenever) for services in one place?
Imagine being in a prayer meeting of 253,000. The mind boggles.

I always like to tell people there are 1 billion people in my church. All depends on how you look at it!

  • hi andrew
good to hear from you. hey everyone, andrew hamilton and i were in youth group together at Maylands Baptist Church back in 1980. When we were young.
    He blogs at BackYard Missionary
When we were teenagers all the girls used to like him and not me, so i have a personal thing against him, but apart from that, he is a great man and one of my favourite bloggers.

  • Andrew, thanks for this list. It is interesting to note the number of these churches that are in developing countries. What is it that they are doing correctly and the western church is missing? Maybe a whole new discussion?

    yes – great question
i am reviewing a book for Zondervan today that deals with that – Bob Roberts is the author – hes a large church guy in Dallas that is learning from whats going on overseas (as is Rick Warren)
David Garrison’s book Church Planting Movements is a book that looks at why the networks are growing so large and so fast.
If i think of better, i will let youknow
