Heroes – what a ride!!!

Just saw the final episode of Heroes. What a ride! Wont say what happened for those have haven’t seen the final or for those outside USA without broadband but hey . . . it finishes well and i cant wait for the next Volume.

Oka HeroesIts been a great show. Tight story and script. I LOVED the Japanese guys. Masi Oka was hilarious and his friend was great also. I wish the evil Pettrelli mother didnt say that she would “say a prayer” for the dying man. With so much supernatural stuff happening, both good and bad, its a shame that Christianity peeks its head through this horrible lady. Anyone have some thoughts on the religious themes in Heroes??????

I really don’t watch TV episodes and I hate sitcoms. I like LOST and our family is committed to an hour a week. I didnt have time for 24 but may consider it in the future.

We did watch Alias – buying the DVDs on ebay and selling them again made it cheap and convenient.

  • Don’t bother with 24 unless you get previous seasons. This years was a huge disappointment.

  • Samuel Linde says:

Agreed, Heroes was an amazing show! Also, I echo your thoughts about Evil Mom Petrelli. Did you also notice that here “ability” seems to be some sort of persuasion or something – she laid hands (another Christian symbol?) on both Nathan and Claire, comforting them in some odd way.
Looking forward to the season finale of Lost as well. Is Jack doing another project bound to fail?

  • Mark Begemann says:

Those are basically the same few shows we’ve watched over the past couple years. Yeah, skip 24 and go with the new Battlestar Galactica, brother- so much underlying philosophy and religion done very well. Start with the mini-series and season 1. Have fun!

  • I totally agree, the show is great. I won’t get to see the final until tonight, but I would say there are plenty of religious themes in it. Not unlike the X-Men series, the series has something to say about xenophobia, community, gifting etc.
For my money the strongest themes have to do with the effects of power on a person. The character of each hero or anti-hero seems to be based on how he/she is ethically handling the “power” they have been given. I think the series should be read with Richard Foster’s outstanding commentary on the nature of power and the spirit in “The challenge of the Disciplined life: money, sex, and power”
I think all of us have a little Seyler in them, no? This is why I have chosen to stop using my powers of telekinesis in everyday life. It’s my cross to bear!

What a great ending. Spoiler Alert! If you’ve not watched the last episode the next paragraph could ruin some things for you.
Religious themes? Seems to me that Heroes, especially in the opening comments of each show, has a lot of determinism/materialism in conflict with a more meaningful fate/destiny, all in tension with the element of choice. Is the future set in stone? It would appear not. Do we have a purpose to fulfill? It would appear so (Stanley Grenz would be proud). I’m looking forward to next season, because I anticipate the return of at least Peter, if not Nathan, in which case we could be looking at a much more distinct Christ-figure. Ooohh, very Matrix-esque.

  • I also vote for Galactica over 24. Both are good but BG is killer.
I’m not sure that Mrs. Petrelli is evil. When she was speaking with Deveaux I got the feeling that they were both on the same side but with very different ideas about how to get there. I wondered if exploding NY was a means by which to kill the man who Molly must not think about. One problem: If Peter absorbed his brothers abilities, why couldn’t he just fly one up and explode instead of Peter having to carry him up (though I’m not at all certain they’re dead). Looking forward to next season! I wa happy to see that Nathan gave in to his better instincts. Also, was that Syler going down into the grate??
Great show. Can’t wait ’til next year.

  • ugh – correction:
“One problem: If Peter absorbed his brothers abilities, why couldn’t he just fly one up and explode instead of Peter having to carry him up (though I’m not at all certain they’re dead).”

  • Danny says:

Hey Andrew, the show is great. Hiros Japanese Friend and the bad shape-shifter lady both attend Mosaic Church in LA.

  • Johannes says:

So what, Danny, does that makes them any special? Some other VIPs we can claim for us to show we are cool?
    😉

  • There has been some good sci fi on the BBC recently. I like Dr Who, Torchwood and Life on Mars. Wikipedia says that Heroes is coming to BBC 2 in July so I’ll look out for that one too.

  • andrew says:

i started life on mars but i travel a lot and didnt stay with it.

  • gavin says:

i recorded the heroes marathon and the finale to watch this next week of re-runs..

  • The Petrelli brothers suffered a “super heroes” death (read: they died off screen, so they probably aren’t all that “dead”.)
    As for religious themes:
    1) None of us are living up to our full abilities. We have huge potential that sin has taken away [think of sin as human error, a failure to fulfill human potential (and thus sin becomes that which dehumanizes us)]. In fact, a lot of us would rather believe the lie that we are not different, that we are not special. We then get caught up in empty ways of doing life, going through the daily grind, going through the motions, un-engaged and missing the point of life.
    2) The Heroes are the ekklesia, this called out group of people specially gifted with a sense of shared mission. They seek a sense of community and meaning in life, choosing to use their gifts to impact our world. To be selfless and fight injustice. In effect they become an alternative society to the ways of this world, a saving presence working toward the redemption of the entire world.

  • Yup, have to agree ‘Heroes’ is fantastic, and Hiro is my fav character. And did I spy Sulu from the Captn Kirk era Star Trek in one or two episodes? Great stuff.

  • A couple of comments:
David said: “i started life on mars but i travel a lot and didnt stay with it.”
I reply: I had to read this about four times to figure out what you were really saying. It sounded like you were born on Mars but couldn’t stay there because you travel so much.
Stephen said: “I’m not sure that Mrs. Petrelli is evil.”
I reply: I agree. Both she and Linderman were trying to make the best of what they believed to be an inevitably bad situation. But they certainly aren’t good either because A) they just accepted it and B) were willing to do whatever was necessary to ensure what “needed” to happen would happen.
Linderman might have been a little worse because he seemed, not to fatalistically accept the bomb, but to welcome it. Of course, he believed it to be the means of “saving the world.”
Stephen also said: “If Peter absorbed his brothers abilities, why couldn’t he just fly one up and explode instead of Nathan having to carry him up (though I’m not at all certain they’re dead).”
I reply: I wondered that as well. Perhaps he was focusing so much on keeping the blast in check he couldn’t use any other powers. Reading your sentence, I noted that Peter and Nathan both have names of the apostles. It would have been especially cool if Nathan was Andrew, Peter’s brother.
However, I’m pretty sure that at least Peter is alive. Peter’s mom said to Nathan at one point that since he had absorbed Claire’s power, he would survive. Plus, in the alternate future, it was revealed that Peter had been the exploding man, but he was still alive. Oddly, though, Peter had a scar. How does that happen to a healing man?

  • Hey Andrew…

  • Religious themes are big parts of many sci-fi shows. I think religious stories also inspire the story lines.
