Billy Graham: More Thoughts

“The evangelist’s upcoming New York crusade recalls his historic confrontation with segregation, fundamentalism, and mainline theology nearly 50 years ago.” Christianity Today

– Submersive Influence has the best blog post.

Pix Scott-1 I had the privilege of working with the Billy Graham team during their San Francisco crusade – great time and a great honor. I got to know Scott Lenning really well – his son was the same age as mine. Scott now works for MarketPlace Chaplains USA. He’s a good man.

Steve Knight is Manager of the Internet Department of Billy Graham Evangelism Association and is heading off to Moldova shortly to help in the training sessions. Steve has been involved in the emerging church/ UnderGround Railroad/Steiger Ministries for many years and he blogs at Knightopia. He also weighed in at 86% Emergent.

Andrew

Andrew Jones launched his first internet space in 1997 and has been teaching on related issues for the past 20 years. He travels all the time but lives between Wellington, San Francisco and a hobbit home in Prague.

  • Billy Graham: A Generous Modern Evangelist

There’s an outpouring of love going on right now for Rev. Billy Graham, who may be about to do his last crusade, in New York City. Mentions by Mike Todd, Steven Shields, and Andrew Jones (HT’s all around, in the order I saw their posts). Relevant l…

  • Andrew, thanks for the superlative. Saying nice things about Billy Graham is easy, he gives you so much to work with.
One point though, I do hope to be more Subversive than Submersive. Somebody just commented on my blog that they hope I’m not going under… ;^)
    Gratia vobis et pax,

I haven’t read much about the upcoming crusade, but a messianic jewish friend of mine said that he would be addressing the jewish/christian issue at this one. Anyone know of this?
One of my son’s was saved at a Billy Graham movie, and the other at a crusade in Rochester NY. Blessings on this humble servant of the LORD.

  • I hadn’t heard specifically that he would address that issue, but his greatest regret seems to be an anti-semitic comment. To be clear, the comment was in a secretly recorded conversation with Nixon that came out a few years ago. Graham doesn’t as much come out against the Jewish people, but kind of agreed on tape with a comment that was made. This may have simply been a product of being too close to too much power and not contradicting a statement he wouldn’t agree with, certainly not today. He has repented of it, gone asking forgiveness of several Jewish leaders, and been warmly received. For him to address this in New York at his (probable) last public crusade appearance makes sense. New York was where he was launched to national prominence, and for him to comment on this regret there would make sense from several angles.
Still, I don’t actually know anything about that – on the issue though, I encourage you to read the Larry King transcript (follow the link to my blog) where he talks about it.

Everybody is blogging about my boss, Billy Graham, who is starting a 3-day Crusade in New York City tonight. I thought I’d better blog something quick also, before I head to D.C. I really appreciate Brother Maynard’s description of Mr….

If anybody knows of anyone or anything “Emergent” in Moldova, please shoot me an e-mail. I’ll be in Chisinau for Franklin Graham’s next Crusade (http://www.grahamfestival.org/moldova/), and I’d love to connect with folks while I’m there, July 4-11.
    Shalom,
    Steve K.

i just asked Lee Behar from ASCP (here with me in Aberdeen)
He says there is only a handful of believers and has contact with 3 churches – not sure of anyone ministering to emerging culture there.
Best bet is to find the funkiest coffee shop there and ask the person behind the bar who to talk to if you want to follow Jesus
    Have a great trip
